Apply For The IEP

Please Note: All students applying to MEI must be at least 18 years old and have finished high school.

Student Application Checklist

Completed MEI application form
Email receipt for application fee from UMD’s Nelnet system
Copy of standardized test scores (TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo), as outlined in Q21 of the application form
Copy of high school or college diploma
Copy of passport identification page or green card (permanent residents only)

Note: If the applicant is already in the U.S. as a permanent resident, nothing more is required.
 

Enter the visa type on Q11 of the application form, and submit:
Copy of I-94 (in passport)
Copy of passport visa stamp

Note: Students who are in the U.S. on other non-immigrant visas and wish to change to F-1 status must exit the country and re-enter as an F-1 (if approved).

Copy of I-94 (in passport)
Copy of passport visa stamp
Copy of current I-20
Completed transfer form
Necessary financial support documents from the next section
 

Document Financial Support For Study

Applicants for an F-1 visa or transfer students will need to document financial support for their study in the U.S. The documents that are required can be found below.

Have the sponsor sign on Q24b of the application form under “Signature of Guarantor."

IF the sponsor is an institution, business, or government, then
Include a sponsor letter detailing the financial support for the applicant.

IF the sponsor is an individual who is NOT a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, then
Include a completed form Letter of Financial Support.

IF the sponsor is an individual who IS a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, then
Include a completed, notarized Affidavit of Support (form I-134).
Submit a current bank statement showing funds to support the applicant (and dependents if accompanying the applicant) for the intended period of study.

Submit Your Application

Pay the application fee, complete the application form, and submit the required documents based on the checklist above to Jennifer Moore at mei@umd.edu.

 


 

Part-Time or U.S. Student Application

The application above is also for students with a visa status that allows part-time study, including:

  • U.S. citizens
  • U.S. permanent residents
  • others with U.S. visas that permit study
  • (Note: Part-time study is not available for F-1 students.)

All I-20 requests take approximately 3 weeks to be processed if your application is complete. I-20 forms will be sent electronically.
